Energy Usage in the Home
(Source: USDOE - EERE)
The Whole House energy efficiency approach is to find out which part of your house uses the most energy, and suggest cost-effective measures to bring about energy savings. Space heating/cooling and hot water heating accounts for more than 50% of the total residential energy consumption. Lighting, appliances, electronics, and computers contribute to about 30% of the total energy consumption. Space heating/cooling loads may be reduced by buttoning up the house and by implementing energy efficiency measures in the building shell. Space heating/cooling and hot water equipment end-energy use may be improved by using higher efficiency equipment. Lighting loads may be reduced through use of compact fluorescent bulbs, dimmers and sensors. Appliance loads may be reduced through use of higher efficiency Energy Star appliances.
HERS Rating
The California Energy Commission establishes regulations for a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Program to certify home energy rating services in California. The goal of the program is to provide reliable information to differentiate the energy efficiency levels among California homes and to guide investment in cost-effective home energy efficiency measures.
The California HERS Program includes field verification and diagnostic testing available through certified providers and their raters when duct efficiency, refrigerant charge and airflow measurement, and building envelope sealing measures are used for complying with the 2005 and the new 2008 building efficiency standards (effective 2010).
If you are building a new home or changing out heating/AC systems, windows, insulation, or installing a solar system, you may be required by the building code to have a HERS rater verify the installations.
